SSL Warranty
Certificate Authorities (CAs) offer an extra guarantee for the security of your online business and the smooth operation of your site. The SSL warranty is one of the most important features of a certificate and can be a strong factor when choosing one. This warranty is paid out to visitors who trusted your site and suffered direct financial loss during an online credit card transaction. This warranty only applies when the loss occurred solely because the SSL certificate was issued incorrectly. Payment is made based on the transaction amount, up to the maximum transaction value set for that certificate type.
VeriSign (Symantec) certificates were the first to offer a $1 million warranty. Today, many leading CAs offer products with this level of warranty or higher, generally for Extended Validation (EV) certificates.
The number of fake and phishing sites grows every day, and verifying a business is critically important. CAs run a careful validation process to confirm your business is legitimate, and your business must pass these checks in order to obtain OV or EV certificates. Paying for SSL doesn't mean the certificate will automatically be issued — even large companies are subject to the same rules and can fail the validation process.
